The John Ratcliffe Award

John Ratcliffe was a Friend for over 20 years and the Chair of the Friends of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park for several of those: throughout his outstanding service he was an inspiration to those around him and his determination to make a difference was his trademark characteristic.

It is, therefore, fitting that this annual award of up to £500, from funds left to the Friends by John, will be presented to an individual, group or organisation who/that has made, or is continuing to make, an outstanding contribution to the Park and the furtherance of the Friends’ objectives – in other words, making that difference!

Nominations, which can be made for a Friend, a kindred body, or a member of the public, will be judged by a panel and the criteria they will apply are below.

Note that the individual sections of the Application have been word-capped and nominators should continue on a separate sheet where necessary. Nominators should ensure they clearly explain the activity or project and the role of the nominee(s) in satisfying all/some of the criteria for the Award.

Nominees need to have:

  • Assisted the public to benefit through protecting, conserving or enhancing the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This is an essential criterion.
  • Raised awareness of the importance of the special qualities of the Park, of the benefits the Park brings and of the need to look after it for current and future generations. This is a preferable criterion.
  • Undertaken practical action to conserve and enhance the special qualities of the Park and deliver programmes that enable people to enjoy and appreciate them. This is a preferable criterion.
  • Brought others together for the benefit of the Park. This is a preferable criterion.

  • Nominations to be submitted on the form below and received by the Secretary no later than 31st May in the year the award is to be made.
  • Nominations can be hand-written but should, preferably, be typed.
  • The winner(s) will be notified no later than the end of June.
  • The Award, including a certificate, will be made at the Friends AGM in October of the same year.
  • The size of the Award will be determined by the judging panel and reflect the size and durability of benefit derived by the Park and its users.
