Work Parties

The Friends Work Parties make an enormous contribution to the conservation and enhancement of the Park and are usually undertaken in collaboration with National Park rangers under the guidance of our own Work Party leader, civil engineer Alan Mason. They have been particularly helpful in the aftermath of heavy storms that seem to be hitting our coast ever harder and more frequently.

They meet most Tuesdays, starting at 10am and usually finish around 3pm with a coffee and packed lunch break. The location will vary from week to week and may be dependent on the weather so please check by going to Work Party News or contact Alan Mason direct ( or Tel:- 01437 762387 (07795 196161) for that weeks meeting location.

Although we have a group of regulars you don’t need to come to every work party – you can pick and choose to suit you – the only thing we ask is that you come equipped with stout (ideally steel toe caps) boots or wellingtons.

So what might you find us doing – well this is best demonstrated by some of our recent tasks:-

  • we continue to maintain St Brides Pump House and have recently installed a drainage pipe between the pump house and the toilet block – needed to divert the large amounts of rain and groundwater that we have experienced. The walls inside the pump house have been patched, repaired and painted. This pump house has been recommended for listing as a Grade 11 listed building
  • we repaired and rebuilt parts of the cemetery wall at Dale – removing overgrown Ivy, recovering fallen stones and repositioning with mortar mix. We have also recently built new steps into footpaths at Dale and Abermawr
  • we have regular visits to Stackpole (we usually meet at the Stackpole centre on the first Tuesday of every month). Tasks have included clearing woodland, areas of pheasant berry and creating habitat piles, widening and improving the drainage of the path between Bosherston car park and the beach and, on a wet day making up picnic benches and benches from fallen trees straight from the woodland. These are now pride of place in one of the courtyards at the Stackpole Centre
  • following bad weather, the group spent two days clearing the beach at Pointz Castle – resulting in nearly 30 bags of rubbish and a very large fishing net being recovered up to the farmers field to be taken away for disposal
  • we have also cut down rogue saplings in the meadow by the side of St Davids Cathedral and opening up the grazing area. This has greatly improved the very famous view as you approach St Davids from the centre.

It is not unusual for our work parties to contribute the equivalent of some 200 volunteer days on improvements throughout the park. It is a great way to spend a day out in the park, meeting new friends, keeping fit and learning about the Wardens work and how the park is maintained for all to enjoy.

Please contact Alan Mason if you would like to know more or attend a session to meet other members of the group. For insurance purposes it is desirable for your own protection to become a member of the Friends. Tel:- 01437 762387 (07795 196161) or e-mail
